Experience Yoga in Nature

Unique Mijas Yoga Hikes

Yoga hikes have relaunched in 2022 with even more avid hikers and even more ways to sign up for this unique experience of Mijas pueblo and the surrounding Mijas Sierra mountains!

2022 began with sunny skies and warm weather with a total of 4 hikes run in January with hikers from all over the world! After two years of COVID-19, getting outdoors is the perfect way to reconnect with your self and find balance within.

In our modern world, where we spend our days plugged into our phones and many people working remotely in the age of COVID-19, it is essential to go back to our roots and reconnect with nature.

Contact with nature allows us to rest and heal, the word "Yoga" in Sanskrit itself means "Unity", and in nature we can experience the connection and unity between our bodies, our breath and the external world around us, re-establishing this relationship that we have lost with nature. Outdoor practice heightens your senses and self-awareness, allowing for a greater sense of connection.

The Route

Starting at Bar Mijas in Plaza Virgen de la Peña, we will begin walking through the charming white village of Mijas Pueblo to Calle San Sebastián, a sloping path that weaves between village houses until you emerge onto a main road. Crossing over, we begin the hiking route.

The hike takes around 40 - 45 mins on uneven hiking path uphill. The pace of the walk is easygoing and in around 20-30 minutes we will reach the Ermita del Calvario, a sanctuary built by Carmelite monks in 1710 for praying and other religious ceremonies. This is roughly a half-way point where we will stop to admire the views.

Continuing on the route uphill on steeper paths, we come across the Cantera del Barrio, an abandoned marble quarry that was once an economic livelihood for the local people of Mijas between the 17th and 19th centuries. The white marble excavated from these cliffs were highly prized, and were used in the construction of the Cathedral of Malaga and Seville.

Here we will have our 60-minute yoga session and relaxation on the smooth, flat slabs of marble, facing the Mediterranean Sea, where you can enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of your proximity to the sea and the mountains. The yoga session is suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced.

Afterwards, we'll take an easier, less rocky path down back towards the Plaza where the hike ends.

Benefits of Outdoor Yoga

  • By conscious breathing we bring oxygen to our lungs, improving lung, heart and brain function.

  • We form greater environmental consciousness, creating a relationship of love and respect for nature.

  • We can create new experiences, creating new habits.

  • We sharpen the practice concentration and awareness of ourselves and our environment.

  • We increase our sense of proprioception (the awareness of where our body is in space).

  • We learn to quiet the mind. In nature, the mind is calmer, so we can cultivate a sense of relaxation and peace.
