Why Your Nervous System Needs Yoga

Most people come to yoga to stretch their bodies — but stay for how it soothes their mind. What many don’t realise is that yoga’s greatest gift lies in how it resets the nervous system.

Modern life keeps us in a constant state of alert. Phones ping, traffic hums, and to-do lists never end. Our bodies interpret this as ongoing threat, keeping us stuck in “fight or flight” mode. Over time, this chronic stress exhausts our adrenal system, weakens immunity, and clouds emotional balance.

Yoga offers a way out — a return to safety, peace, and inner connection.

At Asana Tribe Yoga Spain in Mijas Pueblo, our classes are designed specifically to help you regulate your nervous system, release stored tension, and rebuild your body’s natural resilience.

The Science Behind the Calm

Your nervous system has two main branches:

  • The sympathetic system — your accelerator, responsible for action and alertness.

  • The parasympathetic system — your brake, responsible for rest, digestion, and healing.

When these two are balanced, you feel calm yet energised. But when stress dominates, your body struggles to switch off, leaving you anxious, restless, or fatigued.

Yoga, especially slow and mindful forms like yin, restorative, and breath-based practices, gently activate the parasympathetic response. Through long-held postures, deep breathing, and grounding movement, your body receives a signal that it’s safe to relax.

This shift allows your heart rate to slow, your muscles to soften, and your mind to settle — often in just one session.

Breathwork: The Gateway to Regulation

Your breath is the bridge between body and mind — and it’s one of the most powerful tools for nervous system healing.

Simple breathing practices used in our classes, such as diaphragmatic breathing and extended exhale techniques, stimulate the vagus nerve, which sends calming signals throughout the body. Over time, this trains your system to recover faster from stress.

When you combine breathwork with gentle movement, your body learns a new rhythm — one of ease and flow rather than tension and resistance.

Trauma-Informed and Compassionate Practice

At Asana Tribe Yoga Spain, we recognise that many people carry invisible stress or trauma. That’s why our approach is trauma-sensitive — meaning your comfort, choice, and safety are always prioritised.

We invite you to move at your own pace, rest when needed, and explore sensations without judgment. Through this gentle process, yoga becomes not only physical exercise but emotional re-education — teaching your body that stillness is safe again.

Many of our students share that after just a few weeks, they notice sleeping better, feeling calmer, and responding to life’s challenges with more ease.

The Nervous System Reset Sequence

A simple sequence to try at home:

  1. Child’s Pose (Balasana) – Rest your forehead on the mat and breathe deeply.

  2. Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) – Move with your breath, releasing tension from the spine.

  3. Legs-Up-the-Wall (Viparita Karani) – A restorative inversion to calm the heart and mind.

  4. Savasana with Breath Awareness – Lie back, place one hand on your heart and one on your belly, and breathe slowly.

These poses, practiced regularly, help signal to your body that it can shift from doing to being.

Yoga on the Costa del Sol: A Sanctuary for the Senses

The peaceful surroundings of Mijas Pueblo — its mountain air, whitewashed charm, and views of the Mediterranean — create the perfect environment for nervous system healing.

At Asana Tribe Yoga Spain, our small group and private classes are crafted to help you unwind completely. Whether indoors at the Mijas Centro de Artes or outdoors in the Mijas Mountains, each session is an invitation to breathe, release, and reset.

A New Way of Living: From Overwhelm to Ease

When you begin to regulate your nervous system through yoga, you don’t just feel calmer during class — your whole life changes. You sleep better. You digest better. You respond to challenges rather than react.

You begin to live from the inside out, guided by awareness rather than adrenaline.

Yoga gives you the tools to become your own healer — breath by breath, moment by moment.

Practising yoga outdoors can be a wonderful way to enhance your yoga practice and benefit your overall health and wellbeing. In this blog post, we will explore some of the many benefits of doing yoga in nature and how you can get started with your own outdoor yoga practice.

Firstly, being outdoors in nature has been shown to have numerous health benefits, such as reducing stress levels, improving mood and mental clarity, and even boosting the immune system. This makes it an ideal setting for practising yoga, as yoga itself is also known to have numerous health benefits for both the body and mind.

One of the most significant benefits of doing yoga outdoors is the opportunity to connect with nature. Being in nature allows us to feel more grounded and connected to the earth, which can help us feel more present and mindful during our yoga practice. Additionally, yoga outdoors provides a change of scenery from our usual indoor environments and can help us feel more inspired and creative in our practice.

Another benefit is the increased exposure to natural light and fresh air. Sunlight is an important source of vitamin D, which is essential for bone health, immune function, and mental wellbeing. Being outdoors also allows us to breathe in fresh air, which can help us feel more energized and focused during our practice.

When doing yoga outdoors, we may also encounter natural elements such as uneven ground, wind, and sun exposure. These challenges can actually be beneficial to our practice, as they require us to be more present and mindful in our movements, leading to a deeper sense of embodiment and awareness.

Doing yoga outdoors also allows you to practise Earthing or Grounding, by connecting with the earth's natural electrical charge by walking barefoot on the ground, though earthing is a relatively new concept and not extensively researched, here are some of the potential benefits of earthing:

  1. Reduced inflammation: Earthing has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on the body, which can help alleviate pain and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

  2. Improved sleep: Earthing can help regulate the body's circadian rhythm, leading to better sleep and more restful nights.

  3. Reduced stress and anxiety: Earthing has been shown to have calming effects on the body, reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol and promoting feelings of relaxation and calm.

  4. Increased energy and vitality: Earthing can help improve blood flow and oxygenation, leading to increased energy and vitality.

  5. Improved immune function: Earthing has been shown to enhance immune function by increasing the activity of white blood cells, which help protect the body against infections and illnesses.

  6. Improved mood and mental clarity: Earthing has been shown to have mood-enhancing effects, leading to improved mental clarity, focus, and overall sense of wellbeing.

While the benefits of earthing are still being studied, it is generally considered safe and may be a simple and effective way to improve your health and wellbeing. To practice earthing, simply spend time outside in bare feet or use conductive materials that transfer the earth's energy to the body. As always, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new health practices.

Getting started with outdoor yoga is simple. All you need is a yoga mat, comfortable clothing, and a quiet outdoor space. You can practice in your own garden, a local park, or even by the beach. Just be sure to choose a spot that is relatively flat and free of obstacles.

If you are new to yoga, it may be helpful to take a few indoor classes first to become familiar with the basic postures and alignment. You can then bring this knowledge with you to your outdoor practice and adapt as needed to suit the environment.

In conclusion, practising yoga outdoors is an excellent way to enhance your yoga practice and improve your overall health and wellbeing. By connecting with nature, breathing in fresh air, and challenging ourselves in new ways, we can deepen our practice and experience the many benefits of yoga in a beautiful and inspiring outdoor setting.

At Asana Tribe Yoga Spain, we organise regular hikes to the mountains around Mijas where we do yoga overlooking the sea on a marble quarry, which is a stunning backdrop for your yoga practice. You can find out more or book your hike here.
