Do you ever feel stuck in fight-or-flight mode? Trouble sleeping, digestive issues, tension in your body, or a racing mind? You’re not alone—and one of the most powerful tools for healing lies within you: your vagus nerve.
At Asana Tribe Yoga in Mijas Pueblo, we work with the body’s natural ability to self-regulate through gentle nervous system-informed yoga. Understanding the vagus nerve is a beautiful step toward reclaiming your calm.
What is the Vagus Nerve?
The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body and a key part of your parasympathetic nervous system—which controls rest, digestion, and recovery.
When the vagus nerve is activated, it sends a message to your body that you are safe. This allows the heart rate to slow, muscles to relax, and digestion to flow. In other words—it helps bring your whole system out of stress mode.
How Yoga Stimulates the Vagus Nerve
Yoga, especially slow and mindful styles, can tone the vagus nerve, improving your body’s ability to return to calm after stress.
Here’s how our classes at Asana Tribe Yoga help:
1. Breathwork (Pranayama)
Techniques like deep belly breathing, humming, and extended exhalations directly stimulate the vagus nerve. Try this simple practice:
Inhale for 4 counts
Exhale for 6 counts
Repeat for 2 minutes and notice how your body shifts
We incorporate these techniques into every class and sound bath to gently downregulate the nervous system.
2. Restorative Yoga Poses
Gentle poses like legs-up-the-wall (Viparita Karani) or child’s pose (Balasana) activate the parasympathetic system and soothe anxiety, overwhelm, and insomnia. Explore our weekly classes in Mijas Pueblo.
3. Sound Healing
The vagus nerve is connected to your ears and voice box, so sound is a powerful stimulator. Our sound healing events use crystal and Tibetan bowls, and vibration to help your body move into deep rest and repair.
This is ideal for:
Women going through menopause
Anyone with chronic stress or fatigue
Recovery from burnout or anxiety
People healing from trauma or emotional overwhelm
You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to know Sanskrit. You just need to breathe—and we’ll guide you from there.
